Timelines for our concrete work
The timelines for concrete jobs in any sector vary based on the size and complexity of the job.
Please note, more complex foundations require more time and attention to ensure all steps of the process are completed properly.
Residential Concrete Foundations - Our Expertise
Whether you’re building a new home, adding to an existing foundation or preparing for a renovation, we are equipped to do it all.
The Doerr team has the knowledge and experience to ensure your residential foundation is poured using the proper process to endure the elements and the test of time.
Past Residential Jobs
Atwood Station Phase 1 - Atwood, Ontario
Walker Homes - Port Elgin, Ontario
The Process
We use the following process when forming and pouring residential foundations to ensure a quality finished product:
Form and pour footings directly on the earth
Form the foundation walls on top of the footings
Remove forms
Complete damp proofing
Complete drainage layer consisting of 4-inch weeping tile around the basement perimeter connected to a sump basin. *This step isn’t required for slab-on-grade designs or designs with no foundation or crawl space below ground.
We can complete additions to existing foundations, which may require additional steps such as bench footings or underpinning to ensure both the existing structure, and the new structural elements are sufficiently supported.
Agricultural Concrete
-
Our process for agricultural foundations is the same as residential to guarantee an impressive finished product. There are many more variations available in the Ag sector given the larger size of these jobs, and the various needs required.
We can assist with the following for prime performance on your farm:
Rebar (steel reinforcement) for larger, engineered structures
Concrete tanks for manure storage
“Sandwich walls” for regulating temperatures in your facilities and reducing energy costs
Grain handling essentials such as grain bin bases, unloading pits, installation of additional footings and piers to support grain transfer to silos

Commercial Concrete
-
Commercial jobs follow a more involved process including significant planning and engineering before the concrete process begins. These structures tend to be steel, and thus the foundation work differs in comparison to residential and agricultural jobs.
We put the following in place to ensure sound structural elements for commercial buildings:
Larger footings with piers at regular intervals to support the steel columns
Increased rebar (steel reinforcement)
Accurate placement of anchor bolts to securely fasten the main structure to the foundation

Other Concrete Services
Surveying Services
Site Layout, Site Survey and Total Station Service
An official site layout is a necessary step to complete before breaking ground for any project. Gathering the site details in advance allows other aspects of the job to progress efficiently from excavation to foundation construction.
Doerr Construction is equipped with the tools and experience to provide the accuracy of a surveyor, including:
Confirming accurate placement of buildings to comply with local by-laws
Performing topographic surveys to assess the physical features of your building lot and making recommendations for grading improvements and foundation design
Verifying the elevations dictated by the engineered grading plan to prevent any errors or omissions that may have occurred on the planning side.
Excavation Supervision
Proper excavation sets the stage for the completion of your job, and it’s critical this work is performed properly so the job can move ahead as planned.
It’s not uncommon for errors to be made at this stage in the job, including not having enough space, digging too deep, or not deep enough. Save yourself time, money and headaches by hiring us to supervise the excavation so it’s done right the first time.
Site Grading Consultations
Proper grading guarantees the land is sloped away to shed any surface water and is essential in any job plan, and can be easily provided through an engineered grading plan.
We offer design consultation at a reduced cost, and verify the information provided by your selected grading consultants using site-specifics, and not just assumptions based on historical information.
Foundation Design
The process of designing a foundation requires attention to fine details, and this can often be overlooked by architects and designers. With years of experience and successful past jobs to prove it, we possess the expertise to successfully guide the way and make recommendations for all of your foundation needs.
We will make sure you have everything you need, and can confidently make recommendations on the following:
Wall reinforcement,
Dropped or raised ledges for brick or floor joists,
Stepped foundation designs for walkout basements,
Retaining walls to alleviate steep grade transitions, and more.
Alongside your foundation, we are happy to make recommendations to other trustworthy, qualified third-party tradesmen to provide architectural or engineering services so your job is solid from top to bottom.
Comply with the Ontario Building Code
Doerr Construction follows the proper processes to meet all building code requirements so you can feel confident with the finished product, and aren’t left with any surprises.
